ABOUT MY WORKS

The objects that surround us on a daily basis have a strong place in my work. Their familiar presence is often overlooked and taken for granted. This intrigues me because they can indicate what we accept as normal and therefore can show us a great deal about the conventions of our society.

By projecting my own meanings and reinterpreting the function of the objects around me, I play with people’s conventional relationships to them. I use playfulness and irony as tools and often introduce my own presence in the work (my hands, my voice etc.) to draw the viewer into my experience.

When I look in front of me I see a sequence of multiple layers where objects, surfaces and backgrounds create a stratified view. Each of these pieces has a physical presence, a cultural identity, as well as an attachment  to us as individuals. These create a rich overlap of layers of information.

Using the technical qualities of cameras and devices, I manipulate this overlapping, I play with the sense of scale, the positioning and the depth of field, experimenting with how the physical and conceptual identity of these layers interact with each other.

By engaging and animating the objects and materials around me, I engineer a reaction that questions the understanding of our surroundings.

I like to create connections between the identity of an object and its physical components, giving to these a conceptual value.

How does a printed picture relate to the paper that it’s made of? I like to see the physical aspect as an extra layer that adds meaning to the object. Do we look at an image or at a surface that carries the image? In my works I constantly swing between the two.

Visual representations (photo prints, virtual images, artefacts,  etc..)  increased the multiple visual levels through which we can experience and record our environment.

I like to create interactions with these different forms of depictions of reality, testing the boundaries between physical objects, printed images and virtual representations.

To what extent do representations become a new reality within themselves? How much do they resemble or disassociate from the things they represent? And what are our responses to them?

Technological devices have the potential of filtering images, framing, augmenting and distorting what we see, and they have become an inspiring recording tool and subject in my works.

My previous work developed within a small and enclosed reality, a domestic microcosm where I empathized with the small objects around me, engaging with their physical presence, and playing with their function and identity.

I’m opening up the intimacy of this "palm of hand scale" world and I am in the process of embracing a more outward vision. I am responding more strongly to social phenomena within our society (such as the influence of technology, the  natural world or the commercialization of objects); this connects me as an individual, to larger scale social issues.

I was born in 1988 and raised in Biella, Italy.
Currently I live and work in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
My educational background is interdisciplinary, including studies in the visual arts and music in both Italy and The Netherlands.
At the age of eighteen I moved to the city of Turin to study fine art at the art academy (Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti).
In Turin, I mostly improved my technical skills and knowledge of the history of art, especially in the field of the classical arts. I also developed traditional skills, in techniques such as etching, drawing, painting and sculpting. This sharpened my capacity for capturing details and heightened my sensitivity towards materiality in art. It also encouraged working alone. These aspects are reflected in my recent works, in attention for detail, manipulation of objects, and the intimacy of domestic environments (where I usually set up studio).
After having studied in Turin for three years, I graduated with a thesis on the metaphysics of orthodox iconography. It since has thoroughly influenced my own art, in which objects become "treasure chests", containing and transmitting higher values.
After graduating in Turin, I moved to The Netherlands, with the wish to experience a different school system and environment. At the Academie Minerva, in Groningen, I continued my studies for another two years. This change marked a turning point which led me to discover new techniques, such as video and photography, as well as a more personal, cross-disciplinary and experimental approach.

Besides the arts, I've also been educated in music. I studied classical guitar and took theory exams at a conservatory. Additionally, I taught myself to play the harp. Music has always been an important contributor to my growth and has exercised a strong influence on my art, particularly on the way I deal with sound and noise as sources of inspiration. I, for example, created compositions in which I play hairpins using my own hair, and I've built bird cages from harp strings. My experience as a classical choir singer influenced my recent video works, in which images flow into one another and overlap like voices in a choir.
